model however they please, and then create aftermarket kits for sale so home builders can produce a similarly-styled machine. One of the latest creations comes from Swiss builder GS Mashin, who took an XV950 (model not available in the US unfortunately) and made it “Ultra.”
GS Mashin was founded by Tom Mosimann three years ago, and his bikes feature some interesting interpretations of the lines of a motorcycle. “Ultra” is no different, exemplified by the stark straight line extending from the front cowl down the backbone of the tank into the slight curve of the seat, terminating in a horizontal tail section. The symmetry of the blocked yellow, white and black colorway. The cowl, when viewed head-on, with the look of a medieval shield. Inspirations taken from Gothic architecture, according to Mosimann, to create a unique, but still rideable, motorcycle.
No frame altercations were made from stock to achieve “Ultra,” as required by Yamaha’s “Yard Built” principles.
“I love what Tom has created with the XV as his base,” said Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Shun Miyazawa in a company press release. “I’m really happy that despite going for a really radical look, he shares our principles that a custom machine needs to retain the most important function; rideability. He’s kept the soul of the XV950 and wrapped it in a really original look without any cutting or welding to the frame. What is perhaps also very impressive is that 95% of the work he does is completed with just a few tools, an angle grinder, a bag of sand and a hammer!”
The front fairing was made from 1.5mm sheet metal, and features mounts made from stainless steel pipe. The front headlight is a Bates floodlight, with Highsider turn signals. Asic Robotics machined the top portion of the triple clamp. The tank is also made from 1.5mm sheet metal, and the lower portion behind the front wheel is cut from the original XV950 tank. The tail section comes with Shin Yo rear lights and is suspended by K-Tech kit, prototype units based on the company’s Bullit style. Mosimann used the original hubs, but swapped for 18-inch rear and 21-inch front wheels and added new spokes. The handmade seat features leatherwork from Jose Rey Saddlery.
Yamaha’s “Yard Built” project has featured some of the biggest motorcycle customizers currently in the business, from El Solitario, Deus, Roland Sands, Wrenchmonkees, Shinya Kimura to many others. GS Mashin has found a way to stand out among such illustrious peers with “Ultra,” which makes us thrilled to see what comes next from this Swiss shop.
