Yamaha Unveils DT-07 Flat Track Concept

Yamaha provided an interesting vision of its possible dirt trackin’ future at the AIMExpo this year with its slick, FZ-07-based Flat Track concept, the DT-07. The “Dirt Tracker Concept,” as its dubbed in Yamaha press material, was built through a collaboration between Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. and Jeff Palhegyi Design (JPD).

The FZ-07 engine is housed in a custom-built JPD frame, which was designed from the ground up partly to help accommodate the adjustable pivot and link swingarm. The suspension set-up includes an R6 conventional fork with Durelle Fork Kit while out back is an Ohlins TTX36 shock.

“When the FZ-07 was first introduced, we knew that the bike’s ‘Crossplane Concept’ Parallel-Twin engine had outstanding low- to mid-range torque, which is ideal for flat track racing,” commented Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., in company PR. “Babe Demay’s FZ-07 flat track creation has already shown huge potential this season, with Dominic Colindres winning his heat race and also finishing fourth at the most recent AMA Pro Flat Track event. Here in Cypress, we’ve been doing some exploration of our own, and the DT-07 Concept is the result. The FZ-07 is a great bike and also a great platform for customization. We wanted to see what we could do with the bike as a flat tracker, and we’re very pleased with the results.”

Other elements include VORTEX sprockets and handlebars, SK Racing braking rotor, Dunlop tires, Saddlemen seat, one-piece body (also designed by JPD) and exhaust from Graves Motorsports.

Yamaha racing did modify the engine slightly, with new ported cylinder heads and intake stacks. The airbox was also modified and tuned to make use of K&N filters.

Yamaha didn’t provide indication of when it plans to line up for Grand National competition, but this is one of the sweetest incarnations of the 60th Anniversary color scheme we’ve seen yet.
