Your Honda all-terrain vehicle will run smoothly if you give it a little tender, loving care.
Think of your ATV as a living being: the oil is the lifeblood, the air filter is the lungs, the fuel filter is the kidney, and the spark plugs and wiring are the nerves and brain signals. If you keep all of these systems in good working order, your vehicle won’t miss a beat.
Instructions
1) Locate the dipstick, which is marked “oil.” Unscrew it and pull it out. If the oil on the dipstick is sticky or black, change the oil. First, place an oil drain pan under the crankcase. Drain the old oil by opening the drain plug on the bottom of the crankcase. Replace the drain plug and refill with new oil.
2) Check the ignition wires. Make sure none of the wires to the ignition are broken or tattered. If the wire is visible beneath the protective casing, change the wires.
3) Check the spark plugs. Using a spark plug wrench, remove the spark plugs. If they’re dirty or appear to be in bad shape, replace them. Make sure they meet the manufacturer’s specifications.
4) Check the fuel filter, which is located on the gas line to the carburetor. If the filter is dirty, worn or old, replace it.
5) Inspect the air filter, which is near the carburetor. If it’s dusty or dirty, replace it.
Extra Tips:
* If there’s any doubt about the condition of the plugs, change them, as they’re inexpensive and are critical to how well your vehicle runs.
* For safety, check the tires, frame, cables, bolts and lug nuts for anything that’s broken, worn or loose. Make sure the tires are inflated to the recommended level and the coolant is topped off.
* Use spark plugs and filters that meet Honda’s specifications.
